Ms. Shikiya was a UC Irvine graduate student in Art History (and earlier in Comparative Literature) who put up a valiant struggle against breast cancer. She passed away last summer (August 11). In her last months, she became an activist against this disease that is striking many Asian American women. She had asked Subversity to do a show on the battle against breast cancer. We are now fulfilling her wish.
Robyn was active with Rice Paper (she was an editor of the campus Asian American student paper) among her many campus activities. She also ran a listserv for Art History graduate students. After her passing, her family donated a portion of her library to the department, which will name the graduate reading room after her.
Friends of Ms. Shikiya will share their remembrances of her vibrant, kind, caring and humane life, and play music she liked; in addition, we'll talk with an Asian Pacific American anti-breast cancer advocate about the disease that is striking down a generation of Asian women.
