Rush to Judgment: Youth Violence After Littleton

Irvine -- This evening's edition of Subversity explores the apparent rush to judgment after the tragic shootings a week ago in Littleton, Colorado. Are young people getting out of control or are we rushing to judgment? Addressing that issue is Mike Males, a prolific writer and author who is also a doctoral student in criminology at UC Irvine. The show airs from 5-6 p.m. Pacific time on KUCI, 88.9 FM in Orange County, and on the Web at kuci.org:8080.

Males, the author of a recent book, "Framing Youths: Ten Myths about the Next Generation" (Common Courage Press), argues against blaming young people for societal ills. He penned Sunday's op ed piece in the Orange County edition of the Los Angeles Times: "Get a Clue on Youth Violence: An Isolated Shooting Should Not Cloud the Fact that Our Younger Generation is the Most Lawful in Decades" (April 25, 1999, p. B7).

This is his return visit to Subversity, having appeared June 18, 1996 to discuss his earlier work, "The Scapegoat Generation: America's War on Adolescents" (Common Courage Press, 1996). He recently appeared on another KUCI program, the News Gap which airs Mondays from 5-6 p.m.

To chat with Males, call (949) 824-5824 during the show, or reach us online at subversity@kuci.org.
