Subversity Webcast: Author Leland Saito on Race and Politics in San Gabriel Valley

Irvine -- Kicking off its fall season with the start of another school year at UC Irvine, Subversity, a KUCI public affairs program, Tuesday, September 29, 1998, features an interview with Leland T. Saito, assistant ethnic studies professor at UC San Diego. Saito is the author of "Race and Politics: Asian Americans, Latinos and Whites in a Los Angeles Suburb", just out from University of Ilinois Press. The show airs from 5-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, on KUCI, 88.9 FM, and is also Webcast at kuci.org:8080 on the Internet.

Among other topics, Saito discusses how the various ethnicities in Monterey Park and the rest of the San Gabriel Valley form political alliances to advance their mutual interests, in the process overcoming their intial antagonisms with each other. He traces grass-roots political organizing and focuses on the construction of new identities, including a pan-ethnic "Asian American" identity. Saito will be interviewed by Daniel Tsang, the show's host.

To chat with Saito during the show, call (949) UCI-KUCI (824-5824).
