Creation of a New Immigrant Underclass?

Irvine -- Subversity kicks off its new season (and its fifth year of public affairs programming) with an interview with anthropologist Mark Grey of Northern Iowa University in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Grey is interviewed on "Creation of a New Immigrant Underclass", about how low-wage Third World immigrants are being aggressively recruited by meatpackers like IBP, Inc., the world's largest meatpacker. Subversity airs tomorrow (Tuesday) evening from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 FM in Orange County.

IBP's "donations" to local nonprofits who placed former political detainees from Vietnam in jobs (under a federal grant) at the Nebraska-based multinational are currently under investigation by the county, after Subversity host Dan Tsang broke the story in OC Weekly.

Grey helped Nation writer Marc Cooper with his cover story ("The Heartland's Raw Deal") in the Nation on IBP last February 3.

Subversity airs each Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 FM. It began broadcasting the public affairs show in September, 1993. URL: http://www.kuci.org/~dtsang/subversity. E-mail: subversity@kuci.org.
