Graduate Employees Unionizing Drive Begins at UCI

Irvine -- UCI graduate student employees -- who do much of the undergraduate teaching here -- are starting an organizing drive to form a new union. They are the last UC campus to organize, and this evening's edition of Subversity, a KUCI public affairs program, will interview a leader of that drive, graduate student Brian Chiu. The show airs from 5-6 p.m. today, August 12, 1997, on KUCI, 88.9 FM. Listeners can call the show to talk with the guest. Call (714) 824-KUCI. There may also be other guests.

Chiu is hoping all UCI graduate student workers will show up at Verano Commons for a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, August 13, from 7-9 p.m. The meeting kicks off UCI's unionizing drive. Please circulate this to any TAs or RAs who might be interested.

Show host is Daniel Tsang, who helped organize the Graduate Employees Organization strike at the University of Michigan twenty or more years ago.

Subversity airs each Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 FM. Past shows are listed on the Web: Subversity.
