Subversity on Gay Life Behind Bars

Irvine -- Subversity today presents an exclusive interview with a gay ex-inmate at Los Angles County Jail's homosexual unit, who talks about his recent experiences incarcerated for several months with gay and transsexual men in the county jail system. For his own protection, we are not releasing his name.

He and the other inmates produced creative, if clandestine, fashion shows to relieve their boredom in the large, multi-bed dormitory. Although ACLU staffers visited the jail to investigate complaints about jail conditions, the former inmate asserts that inmates faced retaliation from Sheriff Sherman Block's deputies after one visit. Even though he had served his term, the interviewee remained in jail for three more days after the system "lost" him when he was slated for release.

Subversity airs from 5-6 p.m today on KUCI, 88.9 FM in Orange County. Past shows are listed on the Web at http://www.kuci.uci.edu/~dtsang/subversity. For more information, please contact: subversity@kuci.uci.edu.
