Judi Luu Memorial Program

Irvine -- KUCI's Subversity public affairs program Tuesday, January 14, will present a live, memorial program, "Remembering Judi Luu". Ms. Luu was a student leader at UC Irvine who passed away at a hospital in Lynwood December 23, 1996, two days after a traffic accident in Whittier. News of her death is just reaching the campus community. The program airs from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 FM in Orange County.

Judi Luu was born in 1974 to a Chinese family in Vietnam. In recent years, she resided in Irvine. At UCI, she held leadership positions in the Asian/Pacific Students Association, including co-chairing an Asian/Pacific American Awareness Conference. A 22-year old senior on the Social Science Dean's Honor List, she was posthumously awarded her B.A. in Economics from UCI, and buried in cap and gown. She was a program intern at the Dean of Students Office, staffed the Social Science Resource Center, and served as a student assistant at the Main Library, where she staffed the circulation desk and last year worked for the host of Subversity in the Collections Department. She was a writer and production assistant for RicePaper, the Asian Pacific American newsmagazine on campus. Last quarter, she assisted in Dean of Students Sally Peterson's "Social Psychology in Higher Education" class. She was also active in her sorority, Alpha Chi Omega. She was the winner of a Teamwork Award of the Saturn Award for Excellence. Plans are underway for a permanent memorial. She is survived by her parents, two brothers, and a sister, in El Monte.

Guests on Tuesday's program include her friends: UCI Assistant Executive Vice Chancellor Ron Wilson, UCI alumna Michelle Ko (calling from New York City), fellow students Audrena Cheung, Michelle Chung, Man-Lung Si, and many others. Her friends have also contributed music to be played during the program. Friends are also asked to call the program to express their thoughts of Judi Luu and celebrate her many accomplishments.
