Black Activist on KUCI

An African American activist who chairs a successor organization to the Black Panther Party will be interviewed on the KUCI Subversity interview program Tuesday December 3, 1996, from 5-6 p.m.

Kwaku Duren heads the New African American Vanguard Movement, based in South/Central Los Angeles. NAAVM sees itself as a successor group to the Black Panther Party. NAAVM members were in Orange County Sunday for a "Voices against Oppression" event at Koos Art Cafe in Santa Ana, where they also presented a videotape, "Passing It On," a documentary about the BPP. An NAAVM activist and former BPP member, Shareef Abdullah, Sunday exhorted the packed audience of dozens of mostly white teen punk rockers to get politically involved. Later this month, former BPP member Geronimo Pratt appeals his 1972 murder conviction in an Orange County courtroom. The appeal hearing was moved from L.A. County.

NAAVM can be reached at PO Box 3161, Compton, CA 90223. Listeners can dial (714) 824-KUCI to chat with the guest during the show.

Subversity airs each Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 FM. Show host is Daniel C. Tsang. Selected shows are available on the Web: http://www.kuci.uci.edu/~dtsang/subversity.
