Subversity KUCI Fund drive edition

Irvine -- On Friday May 10, 2002, KUCI begins its annual fund drive, seeking this year to raise $15,000. The drive lasts for 10 days.

As a Subversity listener, you are encouraged to call in to pledge. For a basic $30 pledge, you can get a CD or T-shirt. CDs include one by Noam Chomsky.

Over the years, some generous Subversity listeners (they were newly graduated UCI graduate students) have pledged several hundred dollars each to support our alternative radio programming.

Subversity has been broadcasting weekly since September 1993 when we aired (on our first show) an interview with Sami Odeh, the brother of Alex, an Arab American assassinated in an act of domestic terrorism in Santa Ana. The perpetrators have still not been brought to justice.

On Friday's edition, we look back at this year's programming, starting off with an audio excerpt from a talk by Edward Said at Chapman University. Then we play clips of interviews with various guests, including UCI neurologist Ian Lipkin (discoverer of the West Nile virus), talking about public health preparedness in the wake of the anthrax scare; writer Harvey Wasserman on what might happen if there were a terrorist attack on San Onofre Nuclear Facility south of UCI; Katherine Whitlock of the AFSC on the limitations of hate crime legislation; and Lucas Benitez and Peter Stedman from Florida on the Taco Bell boycott (which originally aired on Alternative News, another KUCI show I host).

Call 949 824 5824 to pledge your support to continue resistance radio programming like Subversity's in this time of war.

The show airs from 5-6 pm on KUCI, 88.9 fm in Orange County, Calif., and is streamed live on the Web via kuci.org.

This week's OC Weekly has two articles of interest:

Human Rights film fest at UCI coming up:

(My take on progressive, indie films being shown, including one by a UCI graduate student)

have fun and thanx for being there!

Comradely,
