New Vietnamese American weekly

Irvine -- A new weekly has appeared in Little Saigon. It's Viet Tide, a bilingual paper in Vietnamese with an English-language section. On Subversity today, we chat with Phan Tran Hieu, the editor of the English section.

The section has profiled community activists and others, including Alex Hoa, an AIDS activist in Orange County. The August 10 issue contains a feature on Hoa talking about Cafe Tinh Trai, the gay Vietnamese American group, and on homosexuality among the Viet Kieu (overseas Vietnamese).

Phan recently left the OC Register, where he was a reporter, to work at Viet Tide. He was last on Subversity discussing his trip back to Vietnam to uncover the "roots of unrest" in Little Saigon from two years ago. That interview is on Realaudio at: http://kuci.org/~dtsang/subversity/Sv990706.ram. His columns about the trip were later published in a book, "The Roots of Unrest" by the Register.

Subversity, a KUCI public affairs show, airs this evening from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 fm in Orange County. It is also Web-cast via kuci.org.

To chat with our guest, call 949 824-5824 during the show.
