Truth and Reconciliation in South Africa

Irvine -- Can truth come out and reconciliation occur in South Africa?

Subversity, a KUCI public affairs program, kicks off its Spring Quarter programming with a look at South Africa and the new award-winning documentary, "Long Night's Journey into Day." The show airs from 5-6 p.m. this evening (Friday, April 7) on KUCI, 88.9 fm in Orange County, and web-cast simultaneously on kuci.org/listen.html.

The show features an interview with Peter Biehl, father of Amy Biehl, the Fulbright scholar from Newport Beach, whose murder is among the cases considered by South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission that is the subject of the film.

Biehl, who appears in the documentary with his wife Linda, forgave the killers of their daughter during the commission's public hearings. The film, which showed to two packed houses at the Newport Beach Film Festival Wednesday night, garned the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at this year's Sundance Festival. Among those active with the Amy Biehl Foundation is UCI student Crystal Gonzalez, who has worked to implement some of the foundation's goals here in the U.S. among Mexican Americans in the Coachella Valley.

We'll also bring you the discussion at Edwards Island during the Q&A with the Biehls and the filmmakers, life partners Frances Reid and Deborah Hoffmann, of Iris Films. Reid directed "In the Best Interests of the Children" and "The Faces of AIDs." Hoffmann edited "The Times of Harvey Milk" and Marlon Riggs' "Color Adjustment" and "Ethnic Notions".

Another director, Chinese-Canadian Hunt Hoe, who appeared on Subversity last Friday, last night won the Best Director's Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival. The festival is now over. You can hear his interview on RealAudio: falco.kuci.uci.edu/~dtsang/subversity/Sv000331.ram.
