Upcoming Pacifica Freelancer Strike

Irvine -- Subversity, a public affairs interview program, this evening features the Save Pacifica Movement and focuses on the upcoming strike by freelancers at the Pacifica Network News. The show airs from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 fm in Orange County, and is Web-cast at kuci.org/listen.html.

Pacifica is currently under attack over its "gag" rule. Amidst charges of censorship, Pacifica reporters and show hosts have been forced to leave their shows or their work at individual Pacifica affiliated stations, including KPFK in Southern California.

Among those joining in a conversation about the future of the progressive network are Robin Urevich, a freelancer with the Pacifica Network News; Carol Spooner, a plaintiff in a civil suit seeking to remove the Pacifica Board; and Blase Bonpane, director of the Office of the Americas, host of Latin American News, which was pulled from KPFK after airing for over two decades. As senior programmer at the station, Bonpane has argued that "we must save Pacifica." The strike by Urevich and fellow contributors to the Pacfica Network News is slated to begin Monday. KPFK had banned Urevich after she wrote a piece for Random Lengths about the censorship at the station. See: Where Was/Is KPFK? and: Robin Urevich Banned from KPFK...
