New in the KUCI Music Library / June 23, 2008
June 23, 2008
by: Sam Farzin, KUCI Music Director

KUCI compatriots,

I was in Berkeley and San Francisco this past week. I walked a lot. I got two Buddhist music CDs from Chinatown, but when I got home and tried one of them, it turned out to be a VCD. What the heck!

Here are three weeks worth of adds. The second half has been in the library since lawst week, while the first half has only been there since last night. There are a LOT of quality new releases. They are pretty. Play them?!

Everything will be back to 100% normalcy on Monday.

Here are some words, briefly, as there are so many!

Earlimart - Hymn And Her [Major Domo]
Poppy cute prolific and from Los Angeles.

High Places - 03/07 - 09/07 [Thrill Jockey]
Mystical magic sounds with girl singing and lyrics about space and ducks. Peep their debut LP cover.

The Chap - Mega Breakfast [Ghostly]
This caught me off guard! Hot Chip gone silly gone wacky but totally sincerely awesome. Very rec'd!

Be Your Own PET - Get Damaged EP [Universal/XL]
Universal cut three tracks from the most recent Be Your Own PET because they were "too violent." Weird, because they also put out stuff like...Eminem. These are the three tracks + a b-side.

Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog - Party Intellectuals [Pi Recordings]
Tom Wait's guitarist man. This is an "experimental" add, but it ROCKS so hard. Totally brilliant virtuosity.

Thee Makeout Party - Play Pretend [Teenacide]
Do you like the Exploding Hearts? Because then you will probably like this band.

Ribbons - Surprise Attacks [Electric Lights Music]
Former singer of My Teenage Stride teams up with drummer dude and makes dark-pop album. Gems abounddd.

John Matthias - Stories From The Watercooler [Counter]
Really solid singer-songwriter stuff with all the bells and whistles. Don't write it off because it is totally worthwhile.

The Ks - Can't Keep It Together [Flatware]
Kitchensink pop from NYC. These guys are 110% all the time, sorta AM radio sounds.

I Heart Hiroshima - Tuff Teef [Valve]
Post-punk pop noise from Australia. Melancholic but not.

BACKLOGGED ADDS
Wolf Parade - At Mount Zoomer [Sub Pop]
Canadian kings return with 2nd record after recording 100000 side projects a person. Epic and anthemic very canadian and very worthwhile.

My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges [ATO]
I have heard this band is amazing live, and I think i need to see them at some point. This record is sort of a hodgepodge of many a style. The single is pretty catchy ("Touch Me I Am Going To Scream, Pt. 2").

The Notwist - The Devil, You + Me [Domino]
German folks keepin' it real. Most of you are probably familiar.

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes [Sub Pop]
Really hyped but really good. Think the quieter moments of Akron/Family, or the louder moments, minus the psychedelia. REALLY solid!

Tilly And The Wall - O [Team Love]
Indie mainstays. They have a tap dancer. They are cute and lovable.

Shearwater - Rook [Matador]
One-time Okkervil River side project - to give you an idea to the sound. They are opening for COLDPLAY on like 6 dates. How life affirming does that have to be!

Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You [Almost Gold]
Breakout indie/electro sensations. We probably won't be able to play these guys for that much longer...

Herman Dune - 1-2-3/Apple Tree EP [Everloving]

My Brightest Diamond - A Thousand Shark's Teeth [Asthmatic Kitty]
Able vocal chords graze all over sounds of guitars and what have you.

Free Kitten - Inherit [Ecstatic Peace]
Yoshimi from Boredoms, Kim from Sonic Youth, and Julie from Pussy Galore. (Experimental) Girls gone wild (?).

Modey Lemon - Season Of Sweets [Birdman]
Harks to a rocky early 90s indie sound, poptimism and pounding.

King Darves - The sun Splits For The Blind Swimmer [De Stijl]
Astounding singer-songwriter stuff here, gruff voiced and unconventional. If you dug Ed Askew check it.

Cineplexx - Picnic [Portia]
Exquisite indie-pop from Spain featuring members of Teenage Fanclub and other pop-legends.

Jaguar Love - Jaguar Love [Matador]
From the ashes of Pretty Girls Make Graves and the Blood Brothers. Sounds exactly like you would expect, in a good way.

Bird Names - Open Relationship [Unsound]
Weird disjointed pop sounds bathed in reverb and quirk.

The War Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues [Secretly Canadian]
Blood on the tracks

Make A Rising - Make A Rising [High Two]
Wacky pop epics. "Indie-band Danny Elfman."

Douglas Armour - The Light Of A Golden Day, The Arms Of The Night [The Social Registry]
The new R&B pop sounds of alt-2k8.

The Lexie Mountain Boys - Sacred Vacation [Carpark]
Tribal-sounding acapella foot scraping ho downs. From Baltimore.

HEALTH - HEALTH//DISCO [Lovepump United]
"Disco" remixes of noisenik jams from the self-titled HEALTH record.

THAT IS ALL
thanks for being patient.
