CAPRICE
EN COULEURS
(1949)
Directed Evelyn Lambart & Norman McLaren
An extraordinary animation in which Evelyn Lambart and Norman McLaren painted
directly on film. The result is a vivid interpretation, in fluid lines and
colour, of jazz music played by the Oscar Peterson Trio. shines with his masterful
use of scratching and painting on film stock. Emphasising sound / visual synchronisation,
the film gives warmth and movement to compositions resembling a constantly
morphing
Jackson Pollock painting,
yet never fails to remind us of its very calculated aesthetics when it suddenly
adapts to the score's slower movements and shifts from expressionistic and
oversaturated explosions to minimalist vertical lines that vibrate accordingly
to Oscar Peterson's piano. Designated and preserved as a "masterwork" by
the Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada, a charitable non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting the preservation
of Canada’s audio-visual heritage, Caprice en Couleurs won a Special
Genie Award for experimental filmmaking.
