Labor Moves at UCI

UCI labor has reinvigorated itself. On this evening's (December 16, 1997) Subversity show, representatives from two new labor unions at UCI will be talking about what it means to organize workers at Orange County's largest employer.

From the newly certified collective bargaining agent for clerical and allied services workers in the UC system, are Coalition of University Employees members Linda Salas and Irene Graff. CUE last month (Nov. 5) won system-wide recognition after defeating existing union AFSCME in a representation election.

Subversity will also feature interviews with two other UCI workers, from the newly formed Student Workers Union/UAW (representing graduate employees). Leslie Bunnage and Brian Chiu, both SWU organizers, will discuss the union's card-signing efforts for official recognition, as well as the university's anti-union efforts, including an "open letter" from Dean of Graduate Studies Fred Wan sent to each graduate student recently denying that a union would improve graduate student life.

Subversity airs each Tuesday from 5-6 p.m. on KUCI, 88.9 FM in Orange County.
