VC Film Festival highlights

Irvine -- On our next edition of Subversity, a KUCI public affairs program, we take a look at the Visual Communications' Asian Pacific Film Festival, currently under way in Los Angeles. URL:

We plan to chat with actor Dustin Nguyen, who attended Orange Coast College, went on to act in 21 Jump Street, as well as many other films, the latest three showing at the VC Film Festival.

Dustin Nguyen appeared in Justin Lin's newest indie film, Finishing the Game, that was the opening night film for the VC Film Festival. It's a spoof of the Hollywood casting call. URL:

The festival this past Saturday night presented Saigon Eclipse, a film made in Vietnam by a French Vietnamese director, Othello Khanh, with a cast that included two Los Angeles-area Vietnamese Americans, Dustin Nguyen and Johnny Tri Nguyen. This film, set in contemporary Vietnam, places the Tale of Kieu in the context of modern female prostitution trade in Vietnam. URL: . The film opens in Vietnam later this month.

The festival ends Thursday with a showing of a major new film from Vietnam, The Rebel ( -- Charlie Nguyen, director), which features two other Viek Kieu, the director's brother, Johhny Tri Nguyen, and longtime actor Dustin Nguyen. It's a martial arts genre film set in French colonial Vietnam. The showing is Thursday, May 10 at 7 pm at the Aratani/Japan America Theatre, 244 South San Pedro St., Little Tokyo, Downtown LA (between 2nd and 3rd Streets). The film had its world premiere at the Vietnamese International Film Festival at UCI last month. It has just opened in Vietnam.

Another highlight: Monday night May 7 at 7 pm a queer film from Taiwan, Eternal Summer ( -- Leste Chen, director) screens at Laemle's Sunset 5, 8000 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood (corner of Sunset and Crescent Heights).
