Awards ceremony at Pride Festival

Irvine -- This evening's edition of Alternative News is devoted to the awards ceremony at last Sunday's Orange County Cultural Pride Festival, the annual queer community celebration held at UC Irvine. The show airs from 5-6 p.m. today (Friday) on KUCI, 88.9 fm and on the Web at

I was among the recipients, receiving the Media Achievement Award. Introducing me, Blade publisher Bill LaPointe pointedly mentioned my successful ACLU lawsuit against the CIA for spying on me, and described me as the "alternative librarian" at UCI. He also reads excerpts from an OC Register profile on me (Prying Eyes Were Watching UCI's Library Activist: Daniel Tsang Battled the CIA for Keeping a File on Him, and the Agency Backed Off, January 25, 1998).

Other recipients: Teenager Anthony Colin, co-founder of the El Modena High School's gay support group (for Man of the Year, or as he put it, Fairy or Queen of the Year); the Public Law Center in Santa Ana (Community Service Award), and Lu King and Cov Davis (Women of the Year).

The event was MC'ed by a stand-up comedian and included even a rap song containing lyrics on the awardees.

Thanx to V&J (an emerging Q&A performance art troupe) for forming part of my entourage and doing the superb video/audio and camera work.

And of course, thanx to Tom Heilman, Bill LaPointe and the gang at OC Pride for their unexpected award.

When you get up there in years, awards come in droves. Last month, the American Library Association's Alternatives in Print Task Force gave me the Jackie Eubanks award for getting alternative materials into libraries. And my KUCI colleagues recently honored my other KUCI show, Subversity -- tongue in cheek -- with managing to mention anal sex in every show. Well, almost every show. Just kidding.
