Monday October 27, 2008 Playlist

Wow! The end of October is already here and we are heading into the holiday season. As we get closer to Christmas I will be playing some great jazzy Christmas music and don't think that there won't be any latin and brazilian in the mix!

I always try to play something slow and easy to start my show so that you can ease into the groove. It is 4am after all! A good way to start the morning was the wonderful piano player Harry Pickens followed by an excellent harmonica player, Ron Kalina.

Keep supporting live jazz and independent radio! I'll catch you next week. Jazz on!

Monday October 20, 2008 Playlist

There was a birthday celebration this past week so I played the "Happy Birthday" song Bobby Enriquez style. Bobby was a great piano player from the Philippines and his style ranged from soft and gentle to wild (which is how he got the nickname "The WildMan From Mindanao" from saxophone great Ritchie Cole) when he pounds on the keyboard and changes tempo and musical styles multiple times during a song. Bobby played the Happy Birthday song like you've probably never heard!

Barraca Selva is a band from Spain that I just can't get enough of! Unfortunately I do not speak Spanish so I don't know the words to the songs they sing but the songs are still great. Music is truly an international language that everyone can understand. "En El Equador" is one of my favorite songs from the CD but the entire CD is excellent.

Tune in next week! Mondays don't have to be blah if you listen to great jazz!

Music is the international language of peace and love. It knows no boundaries, it crosses all borders, it has no language barriers. Good jazz comes from all over the world as do the people who appreciate good jazz. Another show has come and gone and The World Of Jazz has known listeners in The Philippines and Spain, Texas and North Carolina and locally here in Southern California. Please continue to tell your friends and family to tune in to KUCI 88.9FM or listen to the live streaming broadcast on the Website at kuci.org. The complete broadcast schedule is on the website also so you can find out what other shows you might like to listen to.

This week I played the theme from "Mannix", a T.V. show from the 1960's that was one of my favorite detective shows starring Mike Conners. The theme was written by Lalo Schifrin and is still one of my favorite T.V. theme songs.

I also played a couple of tracks from "Jaawe Lang" which is a great CD of music from an all-star group of musicians from the Philippines. I don't know if you can get the CD here but I highly recommend it if you can get your hands on it. You can find one of the musicians, Tateng Katindig playing here in the L.A. area and I will be featuring some more of his piano playing in future shows.

Monday October 6, 2008 Playlist

Did you hear the show last week? I played "Linus and Lucy" the Charlie Brown theme song written by jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi and played by David Benoit. This week I played The Theme from I Love Lucy" as arranged by Ed Calle for the Latin all-star big band on the fantastic CD "Jam Miami". I point this out because good jazz is everywhere. Not just in jazz clubs and wine festivals. Too often I hear people say things like they don't like jazz because they "don't understand it" or jazz is "too sophisticated". But most of them listen to (and actually like) jazz more than they realize.

Jazz is in movies, T.V. shows, commercials, children's shows like Sesame Street and the Charlie Brown cartoons and many other places where music is used. Jazz doesn't have to be champagne and wine, it can be beer or kool-aid. Jazz doesn't have to be cool and sophisticated, it can be down-and-dirty and hot as hell! The main thing is to listen to it and enjoy it if you like it no matter what type of music it is. It's all good. Jazz on!
