Spotlight: THE NEW LIMB
June Residency @ Detroit

By Ashley Eliot
KUCI Promotions Director
& Host of Press Pass Music

Elephants and bananas? If you head over to Detroit Bar on a Monday in June you might just see both. Costa Mesa-based band The New Limb are trying something different for their residency this month with Stacy Clark (www.myspace.com/stacyclark). All you have to do is feed the elephant (a super cool ceramic bank) a dollar and you get the Banana EP (the CD is wrapped in banana leaves too!), made especially for the residency. Three songs are on the EP, including their song "Tiger Head," a cover of songs "Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order and "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper mixed together, and Lauren's rendition of "Cycle Mother Earth." On top of that, they have special musical guests sharing the stage and a song with them every week. This past Monday they had local band honeypie (www.myspace/honeypiemusic) play with them.

The New Limb are one of a kind and the band's closeness obviously comes from sharing a house together in Costa Mesa, where they live, eat, actually practice and record their music. They've got the entire package - talent, personality, friendliness, great smiles, style and harmonious vocals that fall perfectly into place. Yet, whether it's talking about zombie-takeovers or baking cookies for fans, you're sure to be entertained in many ways.Taking Orange County by storm, The New Limb may be a fairly new band, but you would never guess that. After playing in the OC Music Awards showcase series this year with about 40 other very talented bands, they made it to the finals, where five bands competed for Best Live Band. They may not have won the title but they did surprise everyone and made an impression on the audience. Their live show is something not to be missed or taken for granted. So what's next for the band? After they finish their June residency, they will head back into their literally homemade studio to record a new album expected for release in July/August.

Be aware: The New Limb are hugable. When you see Joey Chavez (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Adam Chavez (drums and backup vocals), Dan (lead guitar and backup vocals) or Lauren Salamone (keys and backup vocals), you better hug it out.

Now, here are some responses from when I interviewed them on my show, Press Pass Music, on KUCI 88.9 FM, Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. The interview doesn't do justice for how hilarious this bunch is, so be sure to download the mp3 of the show and hear some exclusive crunch sounds by Dan on Pringles.

You guys always make cookies for your shows. Do you guys make cakes too?
Lauren: No, that's too much of a commitment.
Joey: Yellow cake with chocolate frosting is my favorite but it has to be out of the box and made by my mom.

Well that's good to know for all you ladies out there who want to win Joey's heart. That's the cake he likes.
Joey: I think that's most men's hearts.
Dan: I prefer steak. Breakfast sausage would be the alternative.

Lets address the whole living together. Isn't there a rule that you shouldn't live with your bandmates? Do you guys fight a lot?
Lauren, Dan, Adam and Joey: YES we do.
Lauren: It's actually wise to not live with your band but I love it. There are a lot of great things that come from it but it makes things really difficult. You really have to love each other.
Adam: That's it, you guys don't have to talk more.
Joey: It's like the people that you love the most, you treat the crappiest. You know what I mean?
Lauren: Especially since there are two brothers and Dan grew up with them so he's basically their adopted brother.
Adam: We're going on like 12 years.

You guys are like a family.
Joey: Yeah, we're a family band.
Adam: We've been to Europe together. We've gone cross country to Florida together in the little Corolla.
Joey: We went swimming the other day together. We went on a big fan boat on the everglades.
Adam: We went to a coffee shop together. We came here together.
Lauren: And next week we are playing a show together.
Dan: I think we swam in three oceans together.

You guys have done a lot together. I don't really want to know what else you guys have done together just in case it's a little too private.

Do you guys have nicknames for each other?
Dan: Mainly just Lauren.
Joey: They're awesome though.
Dan: Scotch Tape.

Is there a nice once?
Lauren: The first one.
Dan: The first one is the best one. We were tracking her in the studio for the first time, and we were doing one of her keyboards first where she plays the right hand. So we called the track "Right Hand." Then the track where she plays left hand, we called "Right Hand" too. So she's "right hand."
Joey: Right hand Salamone
Lauren: Yep!
Dan: Simple bird is a good one too.

How did The New Limb name come about?
Lauren: There's a different story every time they (Joey and Adam) tell it.
Dan: You're not supposed to say that.
Adam: There is one story and it's true and Joey will tell it.
Joey: My cousin Josh Edgar, it's ironic because we went to Joshua Tree. We went camping one time and we were hanging out, climbing on the rocks and doing whatever. He was stoked because he had just got this new machete or whatever and he's in boys scouts so that's a badge. If you get enough badges, you get a machete or something. He ends up playing with it and falls off of this rock. He fell in a way that he cut the tip of his pinky off of his hand. Like literally. So we all freaked out and it was crazy because we were in Joshua Tree and we didn't know where the nearest hospital was. I didn't know what to do. It was just us. I was the oldest guy there and I don't know what is going on with fingers or pinkies, whatever. So I was like ughhhhh put it in some milk. So we threw it in a cup of milk and we went to the nearest emergency room and they sewed it back on. It looks good now. It does whatever it's supposed to do.

So that's the real story?
Lauren: Yeah, that's the real story.
Joey: Yeah, that's it.

Album Review: THE UNION LINE

By Ashley Eliot
KUCI Promotions Director
& Host of Press Pass Music

San Juan Capistrano band The Union Line may sound wise beyond their ages but they only started making music together last year. And they've only released one album since, which debuted in September of 2008. Now, they're getting the recognition they deserve. A cohesive and solid album to start, it only takes the first few seconds of one of their songs to get locked in. Each song on the self-titled album has it's own message and it's own tale. Whether it's the search for gold aka a soul in "Goldmine," ("I'm like the gold in the mountain / I've been waiting for the rush to come pick me up") or the ode to living life to the fullest in "Catapult" with lyrics like "I came to move not to sit here on this earth / I want to live but not for what it's worth." Simple words to the eye but to the ears there are whole other meanings.

"Rich Man's Tune" seems to bring the album together, ending it with a warm and fuzzy feeling like you want to bear-hug the person next to you and sing along. It's refreshing to hear a band with clever and substantial songwriting that is still easy to understand.

This rock band's roots definitely have more soul than any band I've heard recently. The songs have unique personalities, partly due to the sound effects (including muffled voices from an audience) that enrich their stories. The self-titled album has eight songs, all sure to leave you with a strong impression of their overall music and what they're all about. You will only get the complete Union Line experience until you see them live and you might just fall in love with them when you do. As the band puts it, "Love is the only way to live the way I do."

And watch out because the newest song "Mama Don't Care," which is not on the album, is just a glimpse of what to expect on their next one.

Tonight, special guest band is The New Limb, each Monday they'll have a different third band to add to the lineup. Should be LOTS of fun. Moostache is a fairly new band with a whole lot of talent. Don't forget to bring your dancing shoes.

Lineup for tonight (from first to last):

Moostache
Evening Hour

Here is the band playing the first-ever KUCI Night at the Yost Theater on April 23, 2009.

Shows...shows and more shows.

Last night, I caught Japanese Motors finally and literally the whole crowd was dancing at Detroit Bar. I felt like I was in a Beach Boys music video or something. It was lots of fun. The band before JM was The Ringers, who will have residency at Detroit Bar in April. Those guys definitely know how to get the crowd fired up... there was stuffed duck involved, the microphone was wrapped around some girl's ankle, shirts came off, pirates danced.... it was a party alright.

As for shows this weekend, tonight I'm hopefully heading over to eVocal in Costa Mesa off 19th St. (such a wonderful, family-like place BTW) to see Mothers Sons, Fun Tree and Will Crum. Also, another show to check out is Marc B., Dolphin City and Parker Macy at Czeckers Bar in Costa Mesa. As for tomorrow, The Vessel Tongue will also be rocking eVocal. AND Fu Manchu will be at Detroit Bar. If you don't got to any of these shows, please go to some other local show and support our awesome musicians.

OCMA Acoustic Showcase recap

It was a very interesting OCMA Acoustic Showcase last night. The talent was great. The audience was more like a family than a group of strangers. Yet now that the acoustic showcases are at eVocal in Costa Mesa, they're all ages and free, you can't get any better than that. And after last night, I can't wait for next Tuesday. The first of the two acoustic showcases to take place at the venue included Cory Case, Sarah Green, Poor Richards Press and Hong Kong Six. It was a nice change in the showcase. Cory juggled his harmonica and guitar oh-so-well, Sarah belted notes like she was at the Hollywood Bowl, Poor Richards Press kept me singing "If I were a millionaire..." and last but not least Hong Kong Six (who were featured on Friday in the OC Register) popped it up with their fun pop-infused ballads-- Their guitarist Jeff even dedicated a song to me...that sweetheart. It was a fun night, especially the after party, which was filled with randomness, including giving love advice at Avalon, then an encounter with some strippers at that place next door to eVocal that blasts the Spanish music and then ending at Detroit Bar. Got to love it.

This is why you have to be at the upcoming showcases and the main event on April 4. You can purchase tickets for super cheap right now and bands playing the showcase have a chance at playing the OC Music Awards.

Expect some videos too. Thanks for everyone who saw the show last night! And if you're interested in other bands who played the showcase, look to your right and click on the KUCI compilation banner. 10 songs for $5.

THE JAKES on Thursday's show & MORE

The Jakes will be on the Press Pass Music show this week. The band will be on at 1 p.m. AND at noon you will hear an interview and acoustic set from the band Moostache (OC Weekly's Locals of the Week) who I had in the studio like a couple hours ago. They would have been on the show live but Patrick, their lead singer will be in his 4th period class at Marina High. Young he may be... but his vocals are oh-so-powerful. You'll hear it soon enough.

ALSO, I have tickets to give away to the OCMA Live Showcase w/The Jakes at Chain Reaction (all ages) this Tuesday AND I have a pair of tickets to see Dusty Rhodes and The River Band at Detroit Bar (21+) -- when I play "First You Live" by Dusty Rhodes and The River Band be the first caller and you got the tickets.

If you missed Tuesday's OCMA showcase, here are a few videos for your amusement. You can find more at Press Pass Music's YOUTUBE.

What happened at last night's OCMA Live Showcase??

Last night was the first Orange County Music Awards Live Showcase at Chain Reaction in Anaheim. The all ages venue opened its doors to six bands and over 130 fans. The bands included We Are The Pilots (on my show last week), Moostache (on the show this week), Dolphin City, Halos, Twentyfour64 and Franki Doll and The Broken Toys. I FILMED each of these bands so if you missed the show... then I got some enticing videos that will make you definitely want to go to next week's show at Chain Reaction. Don't forget the showcases are every Tuesday!

I have to say the funniest part of the night was when Irvine-based band Sail Heezer ( who I played on last week's show and had 20 of their fans call in pretending to be different people and saying how much they loved the band) found me at the show and then I introduced them to Albert Ching, OC Weekly music editor- also the one who answered most of those calls when he was on my show last week. And I was pretty excited to hear that all the members in the band either go to or graduated from Uni High in Irvine -- graduating class of 2004 baby! I had to throw that in there. ; )

On this Thursday's show, I'm talking to The Jakes and Moostache... ALSO I have tickets to give away for next week's OCMA Live Showcase and to Thursday night's Dusty Rhodes and The River Band show at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Call in: 949.UCI.KUCI.

Will Crum... Where were you?

It's Sunday... I get an email this morning about a spontaneous show that was going to take place in the Wendy's parking lot on 17 St. in Costa Mesa. Will Crum was supposed to perform. I went at 3 p.m. when I was informed it would start. I waited for 15 minutes... the parking lot was empty. Where were you Will Crum? I was super excited about the random show. I thought maybe this would be a new trend for local musicians. It's a beautiful Sunday for some Wendy's and Will Crum. AND I had planned on filming it and photographing it.

Was it a publicity stunt? Did something happen? Or was I just punked? You owe me a show Will Crum. ; )

P.S. I'm working on a Press Pass Music video promo. It should be out soon. AND don't forget the last OC Music Awards live showcase at Detroit Bar with Champagne Blvd, Starving For Gravity, Sederra and The Living Suns this Tuesday. The show starts at 9 p.m.
