HALOS on Press Pass Music this Saturday!

So last Saturday, PPM live took a break but the show is back this Saturday yet it's only from 4 to 5 p.m. There is another basketball game at 5 p.m. But don't worry, you'll get your Press Pass Music fix because I'm working on launching a new Web site, logo and special online Press Pass Music Stripped Down editions 1-2 times a month featuring two artists each show.

This week, Halos will be on the show and this is definitely a show you do not want to miss because the band is playing BRAND NEW music that no one has heard, I think, and they will be playing a couple songs acoustic. So tune into KUCI 88.9 FM from 4 to 5 p.m. this Saturday.

And hopefully we will see all of you at Halos' next show at Chain Reaction this Tuesday for the OC Music Awards Live Band Showcase. It's free and all ages with The Colourist, Blok, Moostache and The Bolts.

Semi Sweet's new music video for "Sleazy"

Check out Semi Sweet's new music video for "Sleazy." Beautiful ladies...handsome gentleman...blood... a girl with balloons all over her body...Detroit Bar. It's got all your favorites, I'm sure. The title of the song alone is enticing. I think that's mostly because I've always wanted to call someone "sleazy" to his or her face but unfortunately never have. But when that day comes, I'm assuming that will also be my first punch in the face. ; )

Now, it's time to sleaze it up. <3 Ash

PRESS PASS MUSIC STRIPPED DOWN this Saturday!!!

You know I can't miss a show. I've never missed a Press Pass Music show or had a sub for it. It's mine, I love it and I'm still making it happen even though there is a damn UCI basketball game airing during my show this Saturday. I've created a special online edition of the show with a few special guests including I Hate You Just Kidding, Billy Kernkamp, Barrett Johnson and The New Limb. You'll hear some randomness, beautiful stripped down acoustic sets and pure craziness this Saturday at 4 p.m. The show will be uploaded right on my blog at that time and you can listen and download it. Plus expect videos and possibly photos from the studio session.

Here is a teaser for this Saturday's show. Enjoy!

Semi Sweet this Thursday on Press Pass Music!

This Thursday, female-fronted band Semi Sweet, will be on the show to talk about new music and their residency at Detroit Bar this month (every Monday). Also, guest DJ will be Albert Ching, an awesome local music writer who just interviewed Fullerton band The Steelwells for LA Record.

Hopefully, you checked out last night's OC Music Awards Live Band showcase at Detroit Bar. The place was almost to capacity with about 500 people showing their support for local music. I absolutely loved it. Every local show should be like that. And yes, I was super excited...running around hugging everyone...can't help that I love our music community so much. Next Tuesday is the acoustic showcase at The District Shopping Center in Tustin with Matt Kollar and the Angry Mob, Barrett Johnson, Billy Kernkamp, Stacy Clark and Canvas. It's free and all ages. Every show is free!!! Wooot wooooooot!

Anyway, I'm horribly tired and wonderfully excited still. Yeah, I was at the show all night long...judging and socializing...and yes, I had to wake up at 7:30 a.m. this morning. My resolution for 2010 is to LIVE LIFE MORE. If you want to do something, just friggin do it. Go for it, now.

<3 you all longtime,

CONGRATS to Fullerton band Walk The Rio. They just won the Ernie Ball Battle of the Bands, which means they are playing this Sunday's Warped Tour in LA! WTR went up against 1,200 bands and kicked BUTT! Not surprised... Orange County music rocks.

Go check them out this Sunday at Warped Tour and please hoot and holler for them since I can't be there, unfortunately KUCI has a concert in the park to support that day.

TONIGHT - TNL, Stacy Clark and special guests at DETROIT BAR

TONIGHT is the last show of The New Limb's and Stacy Clark's residency at Detroit Bar. Their are rumors of a few musical guests to stop by and play with TNL. Who will it be??? Hmmmm.... guess you better be at the show tonight then. Starts at 9:30.

Here's the flier. ALSO, The New Limb were featured last week in the OC Register and OC Arts & Culture AND the week before that there was an awesome interview in the OC Music Awards newsletter. They're everywhere!,

OCMA newsletter:

Spotlight: THE NEW LIMB
June Residency @ Detroit

By Ashley Eliot
KUCI Promotions Director
& Host of Press Pass Music

Elephants and bananas? If you head over to Detroit Bar on a Monday in June you might just see both. Costa Mesa-based band The New Limb are trying something different for their residency this month with Stacy Clark (www.myspace.com/stacyclark). All you have to do is feed the elephant (a super cool ceramic bank) a dollar and you get the Banana EP (the CD is wrapped in banana leaves too!), made especially for the residency. Three songs are on the EP, including their song "Tiger Head," a cover of songs "Bizarre Love Triangle" by New Order and "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper mixed together, and Lauren's rendition of "Cycle Mother Earth." On top of that, they have special musical guests sharing the stage and a song with them every week. This past Monday they had local band honeypie (www.myspace/honeypiemusic) play with them.

The New Limb are one of a kind and the band's closeness obviously comes from sharing a house together in Costa Mesa, where they live, eat, actually practice and record their music. They've got the entire package - talent, personality, friendliness, great smiles, style and harmonious vocals that fall perfectly into place. Yet, whether it's talking about zombie-takeovers or baking cookies for fans, you're sure to be entertained in many ways.Taking Orange County by storm, The New Limb may be a fairly new band, but you would never guess that. After playing in the OC Music Awards showcase series this year with about 40 other very talented bands, they made it to the finals, where five bands competed for Best Live Band. They may not have won the title but they did surprise everyone and made an impression on the audience. Their live show is something not to be missed or taken for granted. So what's next for the band? After they finish their June residency, they will head back into their literally homemade studio to record a new album expected for release in July/August.

Be aware: The New Limb are hugable. When you see Joey Chavez (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Adam Chavez (drums and backup vocals), Dan (lead guitar and backup vocals) or Lauren Salamone (keys and backup vocals), you better hug it out.

Now, here are some responses from when I interviewed them on my show, Press Pass Music, on KUCI 88.9 FM, Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. The interview doesn't do justice for how hilarious this bunch is, so be sure to download the mp3 of the show and hear some exclusive crunch sounds by Dan on Pringles.

You guys always make cookies for your shows. Do you guys make cakes too?
Lauren: No, that's too much of a commitment.
Joey: Yellow cake with chocolate frosting is my favorite but it has to be out of the box and made by my mom.

Well that's good to know for all you ladies out there who want to win Joey's heart. That's the cake he likes.
Joey: I think that's most men's hearts.
Dan: I prefer steak. Breakfast sausage would be the alternative.

Lets address the whole living together. Isn't there a rule that you shouldn't live with your bandmates? Do you guys fight a lot?
Lauren, Dan, Adam and Joey: YES we do.
Lauren: It's actually wise to not live with your band but I love it. There are a lot of great things that come from it but it makes things really difficult. You really have to love each other.
Adam: That's it, you guys don't have to talk more.
Joey: It's like the people that you love the most, you treat the crappiest. You know what I mean?
Lauren: Especially since there are two brothers and Dan grew up with them so he's basically their adopted brother.
Adam: We're going on like 12 years.

You guys are like a family.
Joey: Yeah, we're a family band.
Adam: We've been to Europe together. We've gone cross country to Florida together in the little Corolla.
Joey: We went swimming the other day together. We went on a big fan boat on the everglades.
Adam: We went to a coffee shop together. We came here together.
Lauren: And next week we are playing a show together.
Dan: I think we swam in three oceans together.

You guys have done a lot together. I don't really want to know what else you guys have done together just in case it's a little too private.

Do you guys have nicknames for each other?
Dan: Mainly just Lauren.
Joey: They're awesome though.
Dan: Scotch Tape.

Is there a nice once?
Lauren: The first one.
Dan: The first one is the best one. We were tracking her in the studio for the first time, and we were doing one of her keyboards first where she plays the right hand. So we called the track "Right Hand." Then the track where she plays left hand, we called "Right Hand" too. So she's "right hand."
Joey: Right hand Salamone
Lauren: Yep!
Dan: Simple bird is a good one too.

How did The New Limb name come about?
Lauren: There's a different story every time they (Joey and Adam) tell it.
Dan: You're not supposed to say that.
Adam: There is one story and it's true and Joey will tell it.
Joey: My cousin Josh Edgar, it's ironic because we went to Joshua Tree. We went camping one time and we were hanging out, climbing on the rocks and doing whatever. He was stoked because he had just got this new machete or whatever and he's in boys scouts so that's a badge. If you get enough badges, you get a machete or something. He ends up playing with it and falls off of this rock. He fell in a way that he cut the tip of his pinky off of his hand. Like literally. So we all freaked out and it was crazy because we were in Joshua Tree and we didn't know where the nearest hospital was. I didn't know what to do. It was just us. I was the oldest guy there and I don't know what is going on with fingers or pinkies, whatever. So I was like ughhhhh put it in some milk. So we threw it in a cup of milk and we went to the nearest emergency room and they sewed it back on. It looks good now. It does whatever it's supposed to do.

So that's the real story?
Lauren: Yeah, that's the real story.
Joey: Yeah, that's it.

Album Review: THE UNION LINE

By Ashley Eliot
KUCI Promotions Director
& Host of Press Pass Music

San Juan Capistrano band The Union Line may sound wise beyond their ages but they only started making music together last year. And they've only released one album since, which debuted in September of 2008. Now, they're getting the recognition they deserve. A cohesive and solid album to start, it only takes the first few seconds of one of their songs to get locked in. Each song on the self-titled album has it's own message and it's own tale. Whether it's the search for gold aka a soul in "Goldmine," ("I'm like the gold in the mountain / I've been waiting for the rush to come pick me up") or the ode to living life to the fullest in "Catapult" with lyrics like "I came to move not to sit here on this earth / I want to live but not for what it's worth." Simple words to the eye but to the ears there are whole other meanings.

"Rich Man's Tune" seems to bring the album together, ending it with a warm and fuzzy feeling like you want to bear-hug the person next to you and sing along. It's refreshing to hear a band with clever and substantial songwriting that is still easy to understand.

This rock band's roots definitely have more soul than any band I've heard recently. The songs have unique personalities, partly due to the sound effects (including muffled voices from an audience) that enrich their stories. The self-titled album has eight songs, all sure to leave you with a strong impression of their overall music and what they're all about. You will only get the complete Union Line experience until you see them live and you might just fall in love with them when you do. As the band puts it, "Love is the only way to live the way I do."

And watch out because the newest song "Mama Don't Care," which is not on the album, is just a glimpse of what to expect on their next one.

The Union Line, released September 2008
1. Goldmine
2. Strangers
3. Pearls
4. Catapult
5. On the Run/California

VIDEO from Thursday's show! 15 musicians perform "HEY JUDE"

Thursday, April 30, 2009

LISTEN to the jam session on Press Pass Music show AGAIN!

The jam session/potluck party to celebrate the KUCI Night at eVocal in Costa Mesa this Saturday was a GREAT success! Four bands, We Are The Pilots, honeypie, Yellow Red Sparks and The New Limb all came into the studio and not only indulged on yummy food but played music/talked about their music. THEN the show ended with a BANG. All 15 musicians from all four bands performed a beautiful rendition of The Beatles' "Hey Jude." The show was epic and a great deal of fun. It's rare to get that many bands in one room and for them all to act like they're BFFs.

To listen or watch the video, please see below. HOPEFULLY we will see you all on Saturday night at eVocal. Show starts at 8 p.m. The cover is $7 and well worth it. Also, the Red Bull ladies will be stopping by.

I SUGGEST you don't....

Last night, the OCMA crew and I had an interesting experience at The Light Gallery in Costa Mesa. While the lineup, consisting of Parker Macy Blues, Sweet Sweet Things, Dolphin City, The Jakes, Lemon Sun and The New Limb were all great of course, there were a few issues though that "suggest" I don't go back. First off, six bands in one night....is way too chaotic and way too much. Starting a show at 8 p.m. on a Friday that is 18 and over makes it hard to round up people that early. The flyers and promotion for the show had said "suggested" donation, when in fact that $8 suggested donation that they said goes to bands, actually became a mandatory cover charge. When did the word "suggested" and "donation" become the equal of "cover charge?" If I had told everyone that it was a free show, which is what "suggested donation" means, then I actually would have lied to my listeners, as what the venue had did to us. After you paid this cover, which I'm all for donating to the bands but some warning would have been nice so I could have stopped by an ATM, you couldn't even go in and out.

There was no alci for the 21 and over crowd, yet it was an 18 and over night...don't understand why. It should have been all ages. And on top of all that bands played longer than they should have probably because people in charge at the venue weren't keeping track of time, so the show ran 1.5 hours late. The New Limb who had fun with it and dazzled the remaining devoted fans with a couple covers like "Twist and Shout" started to play at midnight. And on top of all of that, the bands pushed through despite the sound at the venue not being so great.

The best part was the great musicians who stuck it out and who entertained the crowd...oh and the bar The Little Night that was next door. Honestly, The Light Gallery was a wannabe of eVocal yet with less class, overly dramatic art on the walls and an awkward vibe. It's sad to see a venue with potential be run carelessly. I'm all about growing the Orange County music scene but how can we do it if you don't provide a good enough outlet for your local musicians?

Will Crum makes some noise at IKEA in Costa Mesa

This is truly why I love Orange County music. Everyday I'm impressed and surprised by our local musicians. Our very own Will Crum (singer/songwriter/guitarist) and Levi Prairie (drums, also drummer for Gantez Warrior), shocked the IKEA in Costa Mesa on Sunday afternoon with a live electric performance in the bedroom department. And how amazing it was. IKEA employees didn't know what hit them.

Check out the video. Thank you to the blog Flower St. Listing for the awesome footage. Enjoy and lets keep showing Orange County how friggin great our music scene is. More secret shows are coming....

Hey all!

Will Crum is having a secret show tomorrow (Sunday). Everyone is meeting up at the Del Taco off of MacArthur and Habor, then they are cruising over to the secret spot. Will and Levi (also drummer for Gantez Warrior)surprised the customers at Wendy's in Costa Mesa a couple weeks ago. Here is a sneak preview of what you can expect for Sundays Secret Show. Hope to see you there! Feel free to send me a text: 949.922.2588 or email: ashleyeliot@yahoo.com if you're in the area and want to know where the show will be. Expect a video and photos.

Hope you're all not celebrating Valentine's Day or at least getting super drunk as it is the dumbest day ever. You shouldn't have to be reminded to show your love for someone and you should always shower them with gifts. ; )
