OC Weekly.... rocks!

There are some IMPRESSIVE articles in OC Weekly this week. First off, HoneyPie (who was on my show today) is featured in the Locals Only column, Will Crum's sneaky IKEA performance and fast-food tour is mentioned (click here to view) and Albert Ching wrote an insightful blog about the OC Music Awards nominations, which I feel the same way as Albert does. Go to www.ocweekly.com to see what else they're up to.

Today's show was SO much fun. We had a double whammy with The Union Line and then HoneyPie. Expect some photos, a recording of the live performance and interview AND video.

Thanks for listening you guys! Tonight, I'm heading to see The Bird and The Bee, Melanoid and Stacy Clark. I haven't decide what shows I'm going to this weekend as I have a ton of work I must do.... but next week: Ra Ra Riot at Detroit Bar on Monday and then the OC Music Awards Showcase at The Gypsy Lounge.

RECAP of OCMA's Live Showcase last night

And oh what a wonderful night it was. Last night, The New Limb, Daniel Morones and Yellow Red Sparks packed eVocal at the OC Music Awards Live Showcase. Yes, I am missing one more band that was supposed to be on the bill. Francisco The Man bailed only a few hours before the show.... and with not much of an excuse. Oh well. Anyways, this was the first time I had seen The New Limb play live, except for the acoustic set on my show last week. If you haven't seen them, you absolutely must. It was probably one of the best performances I've seen since the OCMA showcases started. This fairly new band, again is featured in OC Weekly this week, and they are hitting the scene pretty damn hard. So proud of them. Yellow Red Sparks, with a very nice following, finished the night with a bang and of course we all wanted more. And Joshy from YRS actually gave me a shout out in one of his songs. We had talked on my show last week about how one of his songs says "Ash" like three times and all of sudden, after singing that part, he says "Ashley." haha. I love those guys! I love the musicians of Orange County!

The next show I'm going to will be The Bird and The Bee, Melanoid (Joshy from YRS brother Johnny's band) and Stacy Clark this Thursday at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana. Hope to see you all there!

Shows...shows and more shows.

Last night, I caught Japanese Motors finally and literally the whole crowd was dancing at Detroit Bar. I felt like I was in a Beach Boys music video or something. It was lots of fun. The band before JM was The Ringers, who will have residency at Detroit Bar in April. Those guys definitely know how to get the crowd fired up... there was stuffed duck involved, the microphone was wrapped around some girl's ankle, shirts came off, pirates danced.... it was a party alright.

As for shows this weekend, tonight I'm hopefully heading over to eVocal in Costa Mesa off 19th St. (such a wonderful, family-like place BTW) to see Mothers Sons, Fun Tree and Will Crum. Also, another show to check out is Marc B., Dolphin City and Parker Macy at Czeckers Bar in Costa Mesa. As for tomorrow, The Vessel Tongue will also be rocking eVocal. AND Fu Manchu will be at Detroit Bar. If you don't got to any of these shows, please go to some other local show and support our awesome musicians.

OCMA Acoustic Showcase recap

It was a very interesting OCMA Acoustic Showcase last night. The talent was great. The audience was more like a family than a group of strangers. Yet now that the acoustic showcases are at eVocal in Costa Mesa, they're all ages and free, you can't get any better than that. And after last night, I can't wait for next Tuesday. The first of the two acoustic showcases to take place at the venue included Cory Case, Sarah Green, Poor Richards Press and Hong Kong Six. It was a nice change in the showcase. Cory juggled his harmonica and guitar oh-so-well, Sarah belted notes like she was at the Hollywood Bowl, Poor Richards Press kept me singing "If I were a millionaire..." and last but not least Hong Kong Six (who were featured on Friday in the OC Register) popped it up with their fun pop-infused ballads-- Their guitarist Jeff even dedicated a song to me...that sweetheart. It was a fun night, especially the after party, which was filled with randomness, including giving love advice at Avalon, then an encounter with some strippers at that place next door to eVocal that blasts the Spanish music and then ending at Detroit Bar. Got to love it.

This is why you have to be at the upcoming showcases and the main event on April 4. You can purchase tickets for super cheap right now and bands playing the showcase have a chance at playing the OC Music Awards.

Expect some videos too. Thanks for everyone who saw the show last night! And if you're interested in other bands who played the showcase, look to your right and click on the KUCI compilation banner. 10 songs for $5.

Will Crum makes some noise at IKEA in Costa Mesa

This is truly why I love Orange County music. Everyday I'm impressed and surprised by our local musicians. Our very own Will Crum (singer/songwriter/guitarist) and Levi Prairie (drums, also drummer for Gantez Warrior), shocked the IKEA in Costa Mesa on Sunday afternoon with a live electric performance in the bedroom department. And how amazing it was. IKEA employees didn't know what hit them.

Check out the video. Thank you to the blog Flower St. Listing for the awesome footage. Enjoy and lets keep showing Orange County how friggin great our music scene is. More secret shows are coming....

SECRET SHOW with WILL CRUM - Sunday at 1 p.m.

Hey all!

Will Crum is having a secret show tomorrow (Sunday). Everyone is meeting up at the Del Taco off of MacArthur and Habor, then they are cruising over to the secret spot. Will and Levi (also drummer for Gantez Warrior)surprised the customers at Wendy's in Costa Mesa a couple weeks ago. Here is a sneak preview of what you can expect for Sundays Secret Show. Hope to see you there! Feel free to send me a text: 949.922.2588 or email: ashleyeliot@yahoo.com if you're in the area and want to know where the show will be. Expect a video and photos.

Hope you're all not celebrating Valentine's Day or at least getting super drunk as it is the dumbest day ever. You shouldn't have to be reminded to show your love for someone and you should always shower them with gifts. ; )

OCMA Live Showcase at Chain Reaction recap

Six bands... one all ages venue...no alci...no food...done by 11 p.m. THANK GOODNESS the bands rocked the OCMA Live Showcase at Chain Reaction last night because otherwise I would have gone stir crazy. Finally, I got to see The Jakes perform live... how it was what I had imagined-- it sounded great, they looked great and yes, I did sing along. Last night had a pretty solid lineup. The lineup started with Duress, then The Steelwells, The Jakes, Bridgetown -- now called Western Front, The Sequence and finally Years.

If you missed it... well hopefully you will check out these bands and go to one of their shows. I know The Jakes took off to NY right after the show... so you won't see them for a little bit. But you can check out Years this Saturday at eVocal with Dolphin City and The Sequence at Chain Reaction in March, etc.

Love OC music longtime,

Ash

Shows and updates...

Hey all,

As I watch the Grammy's and attempt at doing law homework, I thought it was time for a blog break. As for shows this week, I will be going to check out Long Beachers Free Moral Agents at Detroit Bar where they have residency for Feb. On Tuesday, it is the last OCMA Live Showcase at Chain Reaction with bands The Jakes, The Sequence, Duress, The Steelwells, Years and Bridgetown. Show starts at 7 p.m. fyi. Then the showcase is moving to eVocal, which will be an all ages and free show. Heck yes!

As for other updates, KUCI has officially been given a night at the Yost Theater in Santa Ana the fourth Thursday of the month. The shows will start in April with the first show being on April 23. I will keep you informed.

This week on Press Pass Music, you will hear live music by Will Crum and Hong Kong Six. I will have both bands in during the show from noon to 2 p.m. AND I will have tickets to give away to The Japanese Motors show at Detroit Bar on Feb. 19.

Stay tuned for more... thanks for listening!

Listen to Press Pass Music's interview & acoustic set with Moostache & The Jakes again

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

THE JAKES on Thursday's show & MORE

The Jakes will be on the Press Pass Music show this week. The band will be on at 1 p.m. AND at noon you will hear an interview and acoustic set from the band Moostache (OC Weekly's Locals of the Week) who I had in the studio like a couple hours ago. They would have been on the show live but Patrick, their lead singer will be in his 4th period class at Marina High. Young he may be... but his vocals are oh-so-powerful. You'll hear it soon enough.

ALSO, I have tickets to give away to the OCMA Live Showcase w/The Jakes at Chain Reaction (all ages) this Tuesday AND I have a pair of tickets to see Dusty Rhodes and The River Band at Detroit Bar (21+) -- when I play "First You Live" by Dusty Rhodes and The River Band be the first caller and you got the tickets.

If you missed Tuesday's OCMA showcase, here are a few videos for your amusement. You can find more at Press Pass Music's YOUTUBE.

What happened at last night's OCMA Live Showcase??

Last night was the first Orange County Music Awards Live Showcase at Chain Reaction in Anaheim. The all ages venue opened its doors to six bands and over 130 fans. The bands included We Are The Pilots (on my show last week), Moostache (on the show this week), Dolphin City, Halos, Twentyfour64 and Franki Doll and The Broken Toys. I FILMED each of these bands so if you missed the show... then I got some enticing videos that will make you definitely want to go to next week's show at Chain Reaction. Don't forget the showcases are every Tuesday!

I have to say the funniest part of the night was when Irvine-based band Sail Heezer ( who I played on last week's show and had 20 of their fans call in pretending to be different people and saying how much they loved the band) found me at the show and then I introduced them to Albert Ching, OC Weekly music editor- also the one who answered most of those calls when he was on my show last week. And I was pretty excited to hear that all the members in the band either go to or graduated from Uni High in Irvine -- graduating class of 2004 baby! I had to throw that in there. ; )

On this Thursday's show, I'm talking to The Jakes and Moostache... ALSO I have tickets to give away for next week's OCMA Live Showcase and to Thursday night's Dusty Rhodes and The River Band show at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Call in: 949.UCI.KUCI.
